A Christmas story: Santa Claus came one day early
“Daddy, daddy, will Santa Claus come tonight? I have been a good boy. Honest, I have.”
I look at him suspiciously. Has his greed of having a PS 2 made him into an insincere little boy? I make up my mind. He believes in Santa Claus.
When I was a child, I heard carolers along the street. I rushed out of the slum unit I lived in. I saw a group of teenagers dressed in white shirts and black skirts/trousers. They didn’t look like they had washed a single dish in their lives or ever been hungry. They were so happy and making a carnival like procession along the street. And there was he was , Santa Claus with his red outfit and I looked anxiously at his face. It was a plastic mask. The guy had a real paunch and grabbed my hand and put a sweet in it. I was stunned. I looked for the sledge and reindeers and only saw a green Lim Seng Seng bus.
I had encountered Santa Claus.
Now years later with Clarence at my side, mortgages under the belt and numerous bills to pay, do I believe in Santa Claus. Yes, I do. Santa Claus exists where is freedom, love and goodwill. Santa Claus exists where ever a child is in need of wonder to stir his imagination. Santa Claus exists in each and every one of us who loves a child. We want to give a gift to our children because of the same love. Love once given is seldom rejected but generously returned.
This morning I saw my kid looking out the window at my dog frolicking in the garden. I crept up behind him and closed his eyes. ” Who is this?”, I asked in a put-on voice. ” Daddy”, he said immediately. “How do you know?,” I asked. “I know because you are my daddy”. And he turned around and gave me a big, big hug and a big kiss on the cheek surprising me and every body present. Santa Claus came to my household one day early. It was also the best Christmas present Santa ever brought to me.
Merry Christmas every body.
